I'm back! And busy as ever...

Well, shamefully it's been almost a year since I last posted, but that isn't because I haven't been reading the cards.  In fact I've been lucky enough to have read at several events since last Spring: most recently the wonderful Dead Dolls Funeral 'dark hafla' charity fundraiser, organised by the indomitable Demolitia Tribal.  Later this month I'll be at Pagan Pride's 'Japanarama', using a gorgeous Anime-style majors only deck to read at the Geisha Tea Party during the afternoon.

As well as typically reading at an event every other month, I've been seeing some private clients in their homes, which is always a privilege.  To be invited into somebody's 'sanctuary' and allowed to witness and take part in an important conversation between them and the cards about often very personal and emotional matters... well, it's an honour and a responsibility, that's for sure.

I've been expanding and refining my own selection of decks too.  I've finally got a set of Thoth cards which I'm looking forward to starting work with, following very strong recommendations from a trusted friend that helped me get some reticence on my part.  On the other hand, I've realised that I will never read with the Tarot of Oz - pretty and brilliantly designed as it is, it just doesn't speak to me 'that way'.  So I will be passing it on, as it is in mint condition.  I also have a sealed set for sale. (Yes, I was so excited when I found it that I bought it twice - I was a BIG fan of the L. Frank Baum books as a child - but as readers may know, some decks will 'talk to you' and others turn out to be just beautiful and well-grouped images on quality card!)

My two favourite decks remain the respective Tarots of the Deviant Moon and Magical Forest.  Deviant Moon is a perennial favourite on Aeclectic Tarot and these two also get a lot of love from Kiki at Tarot Dame.  They are quite different in some ways, particularly palette and artistic approach (DM is dark and created using collage effects; MF is pastel and drawn) but they both share a kind of 'kitsch melancholy' - at least that's how I see them.

I also often still carry my Gummy Bear tarot around with me because a) they're well protected in their little metal tin, b) they are small and so fit easily into a handbag, c) they are very RWS so immediately make sense to Tarot aficionados yet d) people with little exposure to Tarot don't find them intimidating like they do a more traditional deck.  For example, I took them on a friend's hen weekend last Summer and they went down really well.  Although, in retrospect, my all-girl Vanessa Tarot (same size and tin feature) may have been an even better choice here!

Anyway, I'm still loving my journey through and with Tarot, whether reading with friends, at charity events or for private clients, and will try to write again soon about what I am learning and experiencing.

Lithatide and the Pagan Pride Saucy Solstice Faerie Burlesque evening

Well I haven't written for a while as I had a bit of a bereavement (my darling black cat and 'familiar', Calliope) and then got rather busy with Pagan Pride UK, whose committee I have just joined, but I have still been continuing my tarot journey both with readings for myself and for others.  In particular I just got a new divination deck, Oracle of the Dragonfae, which chimes very well with my personal path (I follow Dragon Spirituality as taught by Esme Spiderwitch).  Its published by Blue Angel and is written by Lucy Cavendish, author of Oracle of Shadows and Light, another favourite of mine (especially if not mostly because the artist is the wonderful Jasmine Becket-Griffith).  I have copies of both oracles for sale at £15 if anybody would like their own set - just email me.

On Sunday I had a fabulous time doing readings at a Pagan Pride fundraising event, the Saucy Solstice Faerie Burlesque evening.  I was lucky enough to be reading alongside my good friend Sarah from Temperance Tarot and between us we raised a good amount of money towards this year's Pagan Pride festival and had a great time into the bargain.  The acts were all fantastic (and the audience too!) and I was honoured to help various attendees address some personal issues on their plate through the power of Tarot.  I used both my Deviant Moon and Magical Forest decks so that people had a choice of 'dark' and 'light' decks.

I spent yesterday, Midsummer's Day, with Esme Spiderwitch doing Pagan outreach with charity Headway, spending time with people who have suffered brain injuries to celebrate the solstice.  We talked a bit about what the season means to us and others on a pagan path, and worked with the service users to make paper butterflies to decorate their garden and then making patchwork pieces for the Pagan Pride Community Quilt.  It was a great day and it felt right to spend the holy day giving something back to others, as I've felt very blessed recently.

Busy as a bee before Beltane

It's a hectic week for me, as I am reading at two events both linked to magical re-imaginings of British traditions.  On Saturday, which was St George's Day, I was at the fabulous Twisted Tea Party, hosted by Pagan Pride as a fundraiser for this summer's parade and festival (on August 7th at Nottingham's beautiful Arboretum).  Subtitled 'Fools, Freaks & Folk', it was a psychedelic celebration of traditional English tea-times, Victorian steampunk, May Day and the forthcoming Royal Wedding. I had a fantastic time, and all the money I raised was promptly donated to the very worthy cause!

Tomorrow I will be at the Arts Organisation near Nottingham's train station, as part of the Market at Lambhorse Cabaret's Royal Rawkus.  Lambhorse Cabaret aim to "challenge and push the medium of live performance and blur the line between reality and absurdity, comedy and taboo". I think my Deviant Moon deck is called for! It's going to be a riot I am sure - and I've been busy devising short fun spreads designed around the theme of the pending nuptials of heir-to-the-throne, Prince William.    Of course I won't know until things get going what sort of spreads will be the most appropriate - I am anticipating loud noise and limited privacy, but a great atmosphere full of energy and wonder! I think a 'King of the Castle/Dirty Rascal' draw might be fun-yet-meaningful, but ultimately I'll let the cards (and clients) decide. Tarot is all about the here and now, after all.
